For a great family trip, visit this delightful wetland reserve beside the River Lee. Rye Meads is a favourite with walkers, families, birdwatchers and photographers too. There are a variety of habitats packed into a small area, with wheelchair-friendly trails and a series of bird hides overlooking reedbeds, wet meadows, open water and artificial sandbanks. Rye Meads is a prime location for spotting the blue flash of a kingfisher, particularly from the spectacular new Kingfisher Viewing Hub.
The Visitor Centre offers hot and cold drinks and a small selection of snacks, with indoor and outdoor seating and toilet facilities available. Binoculars are also available for hire, with a friendly team of staff and volunteers on hand to guide you. A variety of events are held at the reserve throughout the year, mostly during the school holidays, with activity trails, pond dipping, and much more! Check the website for details.
Entry is free but there is a £4 car parking charge for non-members of the RSPB. Open Daily 9 am-5 pm (or dusk if earlier) Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Due to the sensitive wildlife and habitats at the reserve, no dogs are permitted except registered assistance dogs. It is also not possible to cycle around the reserve, however a bicycle rack is available for those who cycle to get here.
