Artist Talk: Thinking with Slime Mould

We are delighted to welcome exhibiting artist Heather Barnett to our campus for this exclusive Artist Talk. Join us to learn about this intelligent single-celled organism and how it is used in interdisciplinary research! During this event, you will have the opportunity to: + Find out more about this fascinating organism and its remarkable capabilities + Discover the role it plays in the cultures of art and science + Explore the slime mould as a potential collaborator in your own research Physarum polycephalum is a single-celled organism which exhibits a basic form of intelligence – capable of learning, memory, and anticipating future events. Widely studied in fields such as robotics, structural design, and biological computing, this fascinating organism also makes an excellent creative partner. Heather Barnett has been working with this unconventional co-creator since 2009, focusing on its growth patterns, navigational skills, and problem-solving abilities. When kept in dark, moist conditions and fed porridge oats, Physarum polycephalum grows stunning, branching patterns as it searches for food, navigating complex networks as it does so. This event is open to everyone. Booking is encouraged to anticipate numbers. We look forward to welcoming you to this special event!
