Nothing beats the feeling of your getaway plans coming from locals' suggestions, knowing that you've got the inside scoop on those itinerary spots that others might miss. We're here to bring you just that. Two of our favourite places in the county, that's East Herts and Welwyn Hatfield, are making their way onto lots of "must-visits" this year, so keep reading and get to know about those hidden gems in each area that'll have you feeling like a local.

Let’s start with Welwyn Hatfield, one of our favourite places to visit for that perfect meeting of Hertfordshire’s heritage and modern-day influences. Here, you’re sure to find some amazing independent businesses, experiences, and de-licious dining options for that cherry on top.

Stanborough Park

Before we dive into the history of the area, let’s dive into some adrenaline-fueled excitement just outside of Welwyn Garden City, at Stanborough Park. Not only do locals love this countryside haven for an afternoon stroll, a picnic with the family, or a rest by one of their two beautiful lakes; the park has something else up its sleeve. Row boats, kayaks, nature trails, bouncy castles, and the all new Splashlands (for those warmer days!), are ready to be explored, and will give the whole group an exciting day out they’ll never forget.

Hatfield Bunker

Remember we mentioned that local history? Once a key asset during the Second World War that served to protect the country, the Hatfield Bunker can today be explored by visitors wishing to know more about the county’s stories. Underneath what is now the Hatfield Police Station, journey underground and experience the museum for yourself, moving from the Air Raid Shelter to Art Deco Room, through to the War Room before ending up at the Police Room. Stories are waiting to be heard, so let’s go listen!

Welwyn Roman Baths

Travel through time and discover the fascinating archaeological site and museum of Welwyn Roman Baths. Wander through the ancient bath house that was re-discovered in the 60s and has been expertly preserved since, giving you a snapshot into life all those years ago. Let the little ones dress up as Romans, complete quizzes, and take the tour to truly immerse you in a whole other world.

Shaw’s Corner

Moving a little further forward in time, we’re now shining the spotlight on Shaw’s Corner, the former country home of Irish playwright, activist, and Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw. Sitting amidst the glorious Welwyn Hatfield outdoors, a visit to the house will bring with it the inspiration that Shaw would have experienced during his 44 years there.

Mill Green Museum

The 18th century Mill Green Museum is one of our favourite spots for a taste of local history – in both senses of the word! This 18th century restored and working watermill invites you to discover the behind the scenes of the mill, perfect for all the gadgets and gizmos-lovers in the family. And if you want to take a piece of the museum home with you, why not pick up some organic, stoneground wholemeal flour fresh from the mill? Or, better yet, savour some sweet treats and light lunch made within metres of the mill at The Miller's Kitchen.

Stable Yard, Hatfield House

We all know and love the iconic Hatfield Park, the beautiful Jacobean House that’s seen its fair share of tales and made a name for itself as a favoured filming spot. But, nestled within the estate, you’ll find the hidden gem that is the Stable Yard, where locally sourced and lovingly made goods can be found. From luxury gifts for a loved one, to a special treat for your four-legged friend, you couldn’t ask for more.

Tewinbury Farm

Farm to fork really finds its meaning at Tewinbury Farm, where every dish they serve comes from local sources and holds the planet at its core. Healthy planet, healthy plate, and happy you, as these dishes are not only sustainable but downright delicious. Whether you’re tucking into an Afternoon Tea, enjoying an evening’s live entertainment, or laying your head to rest in their range of overnight accommodation, you can expect a trip to remember with Tewinbury.

Brocket Arms

Built in the 14th century, this Grade II listed building is one of our favourite places to settle down for the afternoon after we’ve explored our favourite Welwyn spots. Until the Reformation, it was used as the monastic quarters for the Norman church and, legend has it, a priest was tried and hanged in the building. To this day, locals and visitors tell tales of ghost sightings, so head along for a delicious meal, welcoming atmosphere, and see if you spot anything spooky…

The Wellington at Welwyn

Known to locals as The Welly, we couldn’t give you a list of places to go in Welwyn Hatfield without mentioning one of its best pubs. With a history dating back on the records to 1352, it’s safe to say that the team here has some well-earned credentials under their belt, their AA rosette restaurant and fantastic wine selection being two our favourites. Sit back and enjoy seasonal, delicious dishes, served in the warming and welcoming atmosphere that you’ll find aplenty in Welwyn.

Brocket Hall

That cherry on top just keeps getting better, as we round off our Welwyn Hatfield bucket-list with one last showstopper. A visit to Brocket Hall this year will be a trip to remember, from the second you step onto the breathtaking estate, right up until the moment you fall asleep in the Grade I listed Melbourne Lodge. And in between, dine at their AA rosette restaurant, play on their world-class golfing green, and even delight in a fantastic Afternoon Tea. Sit back, relax, and let the team at Brocket Hall do the rest!

Let’s now move over to East Herts, where rest and relaxation are at the top of the list, giving us a chance to slow down and take in the beauty and creativity of the county. Here are some of our favourite places to do just that – local food, fantastic entertainment, and glorious natural landscapes await, all just a train ride from London.

Hartham Common

Whatever the weather, we absolutely love a walk in nature. Whether we’re catching up with family, having some “me-time” with your favourite podcast, or getting out of the house with a furry friend, Hartham Common is our go-to when in East Herts. With wildlife-rich river corridors, cattle-grazed meadows, and meandering paths, here’s where to really enjoy the simple things in life. And for those higher-tempo days, why not pack the trainers and play a match on the tennis courts?

Southern Country Park

Having won the prestigious Green Flag Award every year since 2008, Southern Country Park has most certainly made its way onto the local’s list of favourite parks. Wander the beautiful landscape, stopping off to spot some wildlife on the duck-feeding platforms, and bask in the beauty that is the Hertfordshire outdoors. Wonderful throughout the year, be sure to come back to witness those glorious seasonal changes take over the park – Insta feed, you’re in luck!

Thirteen Artisan

If all that walking and wandering has worked up an appetite, East Herts is home to plenty of fantastic food and drink spots. New on the scene to Hertford, this reputable bakery has our mouths watering with just one look through the window. With handmade and sustainable at the core of Thirteen Artisan, we couldn’t ask for anywhere better to grab a freshly made pastry (warm cinnamon rolls, flaky sausage rolls, and more!), and pair it with a coffee to go.

Proto Artisan

We can almost smell the bread baking from here! Husband and wife team, James and Jo-Anne, have always been passionate about bread – and the proof is most certainly in the pudding (or should we say loaves). Born from baking sourdough every day during the lockdown to give to family, friends and lucky neighbours, they have transformed their passion into a fantastic business, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Get a taste of their range, from classic sourdough to jalapeno and cheddar loaf, or even get in early with your first mince pie of the year!

Sugar and Scoop

If you’re on your sustainable journey, the team at Sugar and Scoop are here to help. Join them in reducing your single-use plastics, and refill on everything from herbs to hair conditioner, oats to oat milk, laundry liquid to loo roll, and plenty more. And to make the most of what they have on offer, be sure to follow them on Instagram for sustainable tips, year round!

Enoteca Restaurant & Wine Bar

Just a train ride from London, upon arrival in Ware, your first point of call has got to be one of their many fine dining options. One of our go-tos is Enoteca, a restaurant and wine bar serving up incredible combinations of flavours. The team here really go the extra mile to make your experience unforgettable, with warm welcomes to accompany delicious food, an incredible atmosphere and a wine menu that’ll have you showing off your swishing and swirling technique!

Cromer Windmill

Hidden in East Hertfordshire's rolling countryside lies the picturesque village of Ardeley. Laced with timeless thatched cottages, beautiful black and white buildings, and historic hidden gems, here is where you'll find the charming Cromer Windmill. As the county’s sole surviving windmill and a Grade II listed building, a visit here will have you in awe and clued up on the local history, thanks to their wonderful guides.

Grandey’s Place

A truly unique spot that’ll leave you feeling reconnected with nature and local history, Grandey’s Place is a centre dedicated to keeping Britain’s Heritage Crafts alive. Set within the East Herts countryside, the centre gives local craftspeople an ideal place to work, create, and collaborate. With monthly tours, you can enjoy a day out at Grandey’s Place and become inspired by the surrounding creativity.

Buntingford Live!

The show must go on! And it certainly will at Buntingford Live!, where the area’s creativity continues being shared through the performing arts. With a film club, live music events, comedy nights, and seasonal events, a visit any time of year will give you something to look forward to. So check out their line-up, and see where your next afternoon’s entertainment will take you.
