Think you know Hertfordshire? Well, think again. Sure, we’ve got some big names that bring people in from far and wide (we’re looking at you, Warner Bros Studio Tours!), but today we’re turning our attention to those surprise spots that you’ll most definitely want to post on the socials to show off your insider knowledge of the area. Take a break in London’s neighbour, where the rural beauty is bountiful, and the warm welcomes are sure to bring smiles. Pack your bags, bring your favourite travel buddy, and let Hertfordshire do the rest…
Feed the mind and the body
Such a picturesque place is sure to spark creativity amongst those that pass through. So that explains our first stop off in the county, at the Henry Moore Studios and Gardens. The world-renowned artist spent much of his life working in the Herts countryside, and you can see for yourself the inspiration behind his iconic pieces by visiting his studios, sat under blue skies on 70 acres of luscious green grounds. Once you’ve fed your mind in this world of creativity, it’s time to treat yourself to the delights of an indoor pool, day spa, afternoon tea, and plenty more at golf hotel Hanbury Manor.
Food for your feed
Feeling peckish? You’ve come to the right place…It’s hard to believe, but in just one town of Herts, there are three AA Rosette-awarded restaurants. That’s right, a visit to Welwyn gives you the choice of tradition-meet-modern at The Wellington, delicious pub classics served by White Hart, and fine dining in comfort at Auberge du Lac. Eat in the town where Vincent Van Gogh used to visit, taking inspiration from the local delights, and maybe even booking yourself in for an overnight stay at one of these warm and welcoming spots. Did someone say Insta-worthy? We thought so too…
Adrenaline adventures
If lounging by the pool and reading a good book isn’t quite your idea of an ideal break, fear not! High-speed days out are on their way to you from Drift Limits, where motorsport action will see you driving, drifting, and racing with the professionals. Lower the heat and book in to The Snow Centre, the perfect bucket list spot if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at skiing and snowboarding, but the Alps are a little out of reach. You’re sure to need some fuel for when you’re finished, so head over to Lussmanns Sustainable Kitchen and sample the county through delicious, locally sourced dishes.
Beauty inside and out
Cutting edge installations, contemporary pieces, and local history all come together in St Albans Museum and Gallery, making it a must visit for any art-enthusiast in the area. The striking building, a piece of art in itself, welcomes you in, guiding you through a story of past, present, and future. Once you’ve checked out the exhibitions and permanent pieces inside the museum, turn your attention to the natural beauty of the area with a wander down to Green Flag awarded Verulamium Park. Spend the day moseying about in St Albans, knowing that you can rest your head soundly on a pillow at nearby Aubrey Park Hotel, where comfort meets luxury, and you can guarantee a good night’s sleep.
The show must go on!
Designed by Henry and Daisy Colbeck, Cheslyn House and Gardens are a visually striking and beautifully refreshing place to spend an afternoon in Hertfordshire. Whether you’re a green-fingered pro, or you can’t tell your peonies from your roses, anyone can appreciate the stunning gardens. After a wander through the outdoors, keep on treating your eyes with a visit to Watford Palace Theatre. Choose from their brilliant line-up of musicals, plays, comedy shows, and more, and let the performance sweep you away. Once all the fun is over for the day, the doors at The Grove are open and ready for you to step through, where you’ll find a delectable range of menus throughout their restaurants, an award-winning spa, and unbeatable views to wake up to in the morning.
Home is where the heart is
Take your overnight break to the wild as you spend an evening with Home Farm Glamping. Settle into their cosy tents and yurts, soaking up the silence of the area and relishing in taking a break. Secluded picnic spots, Ping Pong in the barn, walks around the estate…all of your getaway boxes will be ticked, whether you’re taking a romantic weekend with a loved one or rounding up the group for an unforgettable weekend. If you do decided to head out and explore for the day, the natural beauty continues with a visit to nearby Aldenham Country Park, which boasts 100 acres of glorious countryside.
